Vithard: The Prince of Knitting

A couple of years ago, I was in Kyoto to do a lecture. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by a woman with the words: “We call you knitting prince”. I shared this story with my American friends, and when I later that year was invited to the US to do lectures and teach workshops I was called Prince of Knitting on the posters. At first, I found ‘Prince of Knitting’ to be a little too pretentious, but it has since grown on me. Usually a prince goes out on adventures, fights dragons and eventually wins half of the kingdom. I go on exploration in a world of wool, silk, alpaca, mohair and much more. Armed with knitting needles, I fight with and against the materials, to see how far, how much or how little they can do. Concerning the half of the kingdom… it is yet to come.

To me, knitting is like playing, it’s an exploration of the expression of surfaces and materials. It’s exciting, challenging and can create unimagined things. I try to pass this curiosity on the possibilities of knitting on to the students of my workshops, the audience at my lectures or on tv.
